CBSE Grading System in Class 10th

CCE Grading System

HOW CBSE’S GRADING SYSTEM WILL WORK

  1. All students have been awarded grades, not marks
  2. The practice of declaring Compartment/Fail has been discontinued
  3. The result of candidates is now declared in two cate¬gories: Eligible for qualifying certificate (QUAL) and Eligible for improvement of performance (EIOP)
  4. All candidates, even if they have failed in all subjects will now have five chances to improve their performance without having to repeat a year.

THE NEW ORDER

With Board exams being made optional from the academic year 2010-11, a new system of evaluation – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – based on grades has been approved. It comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be done over two terms – first and second -during the year-long academic calendar.

Summative Assessment: Based on the term-end examination Formative Assessment: To evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work
1) There will be two evaluations each in the first and second terms.

2) Each evaluation will carry 10 marks apiece.

1) There will be one term-end exam for each term.

2) The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.

3) The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks.

EVALUATION

Students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments, will correspond to a range of marks as indicated below :

MARKS RANGE GRADE GRADE POINT
91-100 A1 10.0
81 -90 A2 9.0
71 -80 B1 8.0
61-70 B2 7.0
51 -60 C1 6.0
41 -50 C2 5.0
33-40 D 4.0
21-32 E1
00-20 E2

Points to Remeber :

(i) Assessment of theory/practical papers in external subjects shall be in numerical scores. In addition to numerical scores, the Board shall indicate grades in the marks sheets issued to the candidates in case of subjects of external examinations. In case of internal assessment subjects, only grades shall be shown.

(ii) Subjects of internal examination in Class X the assessment shall be made on a five point scale I.e. A,B,C,D & E.

(iii) The grades shall be derived from scores in case of subjects of external examination. In case of subjects of internal assessment, they shall be awarded by the schools.

(iv) The qualifying marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33% . However at Senior School Certificate Examination,in a subject involving practical work, a candidate must obtain 33% marks in the theory and 33% marks in the practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate, in order to qualify in that subject.

Important :

(a) In case of a tie, all the students getting the same score, will get the same grade. If the number of students at a score point need to be divided into two segments, the smaller segment will go with the larger.

(b) Method of grading will be used in subjects where the number of candidates who have passed is more than 500.

(c) In respect of subjects where total number of candidates passing in a subject is less than 500, the grading would be adopted on the pattern of grading and distribution in other similar subjects.

What Students are saying ?

Actually i want to advice you that with this grades boards should give percentage also as we can compare ourselves.
since a child getting 99.5% and 95% will be in the same grade and hence will not able to know who performed better.

Implementation aspect should get the attention it deserves, if the system is to achieve its stated objectives. For teachers to make an objective assessment of the students, the work of the students will have to be closely guided and supervised. This will be possible only if the number of students a teacher is required to handle is kept limited. In the present class room environment, in most of the schools, where this number goes upwards of 40, this will remain a distant dream.
The structure of our classes should have been revamped first before the introduction of the new system. The system will take time to stabilise and the students who are forced to go through it during the transition phase may end up as losers.

The new system by itself has lot of merit in it. The utility will depend on the implementation. For a grading system to work effectively, the assessment method has to be fool proof and criteria well defined. There should not be any room for subjectivity here.
The fear expressed in many comments here about no more competition amongst the students and heart burns for the topper are all unfounded. Competition will still be there as one has to work hard and perform well to even score 90%. Heart burn of one is OK, if it can save the pain of peer pressure and parental pressure from a majority of students. This will ultimately lead to pressure free environment for students and encourage ‘healthy competion’ between them.

The system which is taken in pressure of about 10-20 students every year who commited sucide then why should 5000000 students.
the general students are 2 fold loss 1st seat reservations and then grading.
CAN A 96% is given equal importance as given to 91% one????
the sprit of competion will not be seen any where.
so all my dear friends lets come together and protest against it.

What exactly is the point of this new grading system?
We slog throughout the year and crack our brains over getting good marks in the board, but it does give one a certain amount of satisfaction to see the results at the end of the year.
What, they want to take this satisfaction away too?
At the same time, there is the fact that loads of students get above 90% in their board exams.
What if these students want to shift from their present school?
How will schools decide on which students to select?
Will we have to face another entrance exam AFTER our boards too?
Or will we have to give huge donations of money for admission?
This system is surely encouraging corruption…

This system is mainly put to stop suicide i guess im going to commit it!!!!!
problem is one-teacher take advantage and ask loads and loads of homwork in 1 day.dont get it and their words “now see….i will cut your marks and give you 0 im soo happy”
two-its a waste of resouces
three-teachers take their pets to their sides=give them good grades
four- dont get a copy or book and bang your gone
well these sre the main problems i face there are many more but that doesn’t effect me so i want CBSE back with logic and not rote and no projects no child likes it i have done a serveythat out of 47 kids in a class only 10 are happy rest sad the sad 1s include toppers I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO BUT IT WOULD BE FUN ONLY IF TEACHERS UNDERSTOOD US !!!

I appreciate the implentation of grading system. We can avoid both the mental torture to the students by their own parents and the suicide of of our immatured children to a certain extent.
Even after the aboiltion of grading, the recurring of suicides by the students,it should be answerable and cannot be compensated by money in the name of” Interim reliefs” to the family of the victim.

the grade system implemented for a few students who commit suicide will actually affect those students who top in the exams. it will also affect the dive of a person to get good marks and most will not study to their full level……..its not fair at all………..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i think we should all protest against it

  4. March 14th, 2010 at 11:50 | #4

Grading system will reduce the worth of an intelligent student who scores 99%. A student having 99% or 90%, both will get grade ‘A+’. Yup, grade system will also spread the equal distribution of faith, love and perception among students of different capabilities. It is good for weak or below than average students.

    Dear Sir,

The Syllabus is ok, nothing should be change… We have to change our perception…that 10th is not a mile stone ..it is the first step of ur life….Perception of our parents/teachers should be change..

well the bottom line is that most students think it is a good change.

childrens may lose some marks accidentally, resulting in huge variation.

but the grading system dosent make them lose their grades much.

although this is a good reform 4 average students, its not fair 4 bright ones. a student scoring 100 cant b considered equal 2 another scoring 91.
also 4 an average student there may not b a big difference between 51 & 59, but 4 d brighter ones there is a huge gap b/w 94 & 96. each mark counts.

this system is not at all good for the students because it will reduce competition among the students.it will be good for us if the percentage is also published along with the grades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is not a good system as a student scoring 89% and a student scoring 81% will be placed in the same category..IS THIS FARE?????

    April 10th, 2010 at 10:19 | #21

I believe that the implementation of new grading system is not so useful as it had sounded before I was undergoing it. I feel that it will lessen the enthusiasm of the children who are the position holders of the class as a student scoring 90 and another scoring 100 on 100 will be given the same A1. Unexpected deterioration of marks will be observed. Moreover, the system that states that marks of Formative Assessments will be given independently by teacher also increases chances of partiality and demoralisation. Instead of developing the students’ performance, it will be becoming a burden over them as they will be more busy in trying to impress the teacher rather than working hard over the subject. This is being observed in my school. And I being a position holder is trying to express my views so that the CBSE Board makes a few required alterations or the school authorities make it certain that no teachers give marks on the basis of sheer partiality, also it should be made certain that all the required books of the CBSE syllabi are made available because many of our students are just spending time looking for books to cover the chapters as many books are yet to come in the market.
I hope my views will find favour among the authorities in general.
    Thank you.

    @Soham
You are very right, but that doesn’t makes it that you’re not at all wrong. Competition can build intelligence not always, but it can. Even i started studying when I came to know that I stood first in the first standard. I worked even harder and still in ninth, I’m on the top. People don’t say that they want competiion, they want fair judgement. Competition clears that all. Just imagine that a person who usually scores 100 has now scored 90 and is given A1, how will the person know his exact marks, he will be kept in a false belief of getting full marks. Moreover, in my school, I’ve noticed teachers being very partial. Even I don’t consider any system bad if the teachers start being impartial and fair to all.
    So, do you agree??

    April 11th, 2010 at 07:16 | #23

the new system give all the power to the thecher not the student . in ur school teacher start give praciour about ur marks

  24. April 11th, 2010 at 13:10 | #24

the new system has diferrent effect on diferrent students as it will be good for average sudents but wiil be bad for student getting marks 80 percent and above

  25. pronoy
    April 11th, 2010 at 17:00 | #25

    @hemanta saikia
how can say that teachers will not do partiality.
the full advantage is of the teacher. if he/she likes a particular student then obviously he/she will giv her more marks….. u cant trust anyone.

    April 12th, 2010 at 17:04 | #26

Well, 90% of us believe that this system is not good. I too think the same way. These CBSE people told that they would take views of students regarding this system and would abolish if most of the students are against it. Neither of the two happened. It’s just an extra burden on students, teachers and even parents. The abolition of boards has proved to be the worst thing in this system.
    Something should be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. April 13th, 2010 at 10:00 | #27

i hate this grading system a lot and in my openion percentage should also be given with the grades

  28. April 14th, 2010 at 05:05 | #28

no dis new pattern is totally wrong as it hides the actual talent of the student.

    April 14th, 2010 at 15:17 | #29

the grading system is not exactly a good idea. the students must surely know the fruits of their hard work, which can be known only through their marks.the grades do not differentiate the one whose got90% and the whose got 99%. at least this year the marks must be revealed.

this is not a fair thing we don’t get any appriciation if we get 97,98,99% i and my colleagues are not happy because toppers are not being declared this year you should atleast declare marks with grades so that we could know our actual position…

YEA…… I M IN THE FAVOUR OF GRADING SYSTEM Because the students will not take tention of extra burdern of studies…without any fear of less marks!!..becz in grade they will not show their real marks.!!

I want the cbse board to give the percentage so that we will be able to compare and there is no difference between a person who scored 99% and a person who got 95% so its just hiding the person’s capability i sincerely request the cbse board to remove the grading system .I hope this from me would bring in some change

It is Good for all. Kindly introduce such policies in selection process. Selection for all posts be done on the basis of academic record/marks obtained by the individual and not (NOT) on the basis on caste/religion and another writen test. In all the Org./Deptt, during the interviews, eligible/suitable and talented candidates are being assessed lower and the resultant below standard persons are selected being the intimate/relative of concerned staff. It is a cheating with the Nation/Org. It should be curbed immediately. Kindly convey my views to all concerned authorities.

    Thanks

    With Warm regards.

i m also against grading system . a student getting 79 marks and another getting 80 , dere is only 1 mark difference but grading makes it large difference . there is need to be change in marking of paper rather than in changing in system . for 1 ques there is several ways to answer it but if teacher does not found answer in his or her way they cross it out . plzzz do something regarding this . and plzzz dont give quest from outside the syllabus . we have to give exams six times which is not fair at all . FA1 FA2 SA1 FA3 FA4 SA2 !!!!!!!@???@?##

grading system iz best cbse would hav done it before bcoz if u study wid interest but not to secure marks u will enjoy it competition iz gud but to a limit many argue that ”they drain there brain n handle preesure but we r students not cooker preesure”” life iz for enjoying but not feeling it as a big burden study wht that gives u fun ………………. so jai ho grading system jo iske khilaf bol raha hai ya toh woh kuch jyaada hi practical hey y phir woh apne life padhaiko ek bhoj or profit loss statement samjhta hai jahan ham yeh expect karten han ki haan jitne denge utna lenge par baat kuch aur hai
