HOW CBSE’S GRADING SYSTEM WILL WORK

THE NEW ORDER

With Board exams being made optional from the academic year 2010-11, a new system of evaluation – Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) – based on grades has been approved. It comprises formative and summative assessment of the student to be done over two terms – first and second -during the year-long academic calendar.

Summative Assessment: Based on the term-end examination Formative Assessment: To evaluate and grade class work, homework, assignment and project work
1) There will be two evaluations each in the first and second terms.

2) Each evaluation will carry 10 marks apiece.

1) There will be one term-end exam for each term.

2) The first term-end exam will carry 20 marks.

3) The second term-end exam will carry 40 marks.

Also Read:

EVALUATION

Students of class IX and X will be evaluated on a 9-point grading system. Each grade, given on the basis of both formative and summative assessments, will correspond to a range of marks as indicated below :

MARKS RANGE GRADE GRADE POINT
91-100 A1 10.0
81 -90 A2 9.0
71 -80 B1 8.0
61-70 B2 7.0
51 -60 C1 6.0
41 -50 C2 5.0
33-40 D 4.0
21-32 E1
00-20 E2

Points to Remeber :

(i) Assessment of theory/practical papers in external subjects shall be in numerical scores. In addition to numerical scores, the Board shall indicate grades in the marks sheets issued to the candidates in case of subjects of external examinations. In case of internal assessment subjects, only grades shall be shown.

(ii) Subjects of internal examination in Class X the assessment shall be made on a five point scale I.e. A,B,C,D & E.

(iii) The grades shall be derived from scores in case of subjects of external examination. In case of subjects of internal assessment, they shall be awarded by the schools.

(iv) The qualifying marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33% . However at Senior School Certificate Examination,in a subject involving practical work, a candidate must obtain 33% marks in the theory and 33% marks in the practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate, in order to qualify in that subject.

Important :

(a) In case of a tie, all the students getting the same score, will get the same grade. If the number of students at a score point need to be divided into two segments, the smaller segment will go with the larger.

(b) Method of grading will be used in subjects where the number of candidates who have passed is more than 500.

(c) In respect of subjects where total number of candidates passing in a subject is less than 500, the grading would be adopted on the pattern of grading and distribution in other similar subjects.

What Students are saying ?

Actually i want to advice you that with this grades boards should give percentage also as we can compare ourselves.
since a child getting 99.5% and 95% will be in the same grade and hence will not able to know who performed better.

Implementation aspect should get the attention it deserves, if the system is to achieve its stated objectives. For teachers to make an objective assessment of the students, the work of the students will have to be closely guided and supervised. This will be possible only if the number of students a teacher is required to handle is kept limited. In the present class room environment, in most of the schools, where this number goes upwards of 40, this will remain a distant dream.
The structure of our classes should have been revamped first before the introduction of the new system. The system will take time to stabilise and the students who are forced to go through it during the transition phase may end up as losers.

The new system by itself has lot of merit in it. The utility will depend on the implementation. For a grading system to work effectively, the assessment method has to be fool proof and criteria well defined. There should not be any room for subjectivity here.
The fear expressed in many comments here about no more competition amongst the students and heart burns for the topper are all unfounded. Competition will still be there as one has to work hard and perform well to even score 90%. Heart burn of one is OK, if it can save the pain of peer pressure and parental pressure from a majority of students. This will ultimately lead to pressure free environment for students and encourage ‘healthy competion’ between them.

The system which is taken in pressure of about 10-20 students every year who commited sucide then why should 5000000 students.
the general students are 2 fold loss 1st seat reservations and then grading.
CAN A 96% is given equal importance as given to 91% one????
the sprit of competion will not be seen any where.
so all my dear friends lets come together and protest against it.

What exactly is the point of this new grading system?
We slog throughout the year and crack our brains over getting good marks in the board, but it does give one a certain amount of satisfaction to see the results at the end of the year.
What, they want to take this satisfaction away too?
At the same time, there is the fact that loads of students get above 90% in their board exams.
What if these students want to shift from their present school?
How will schools decide on which students to select?
Will we have to face another entrance exam AFTER our boards too?
Or will we have to give huge donations of money for admission?
This system is surely encouraging corruption…

This system is mainly put to stop suicide i guess im going to commit it!!!!!
problem is one-teacher take advantage and ask loads and loads of homwork in 1 day.dont get it and their words “now see….i will cut your marks and give you 0 im soo happy”
two-its a waste of resouces
three-teachers take their pets to their sides=give them good grades
four- dont get a copy or book and bang your gone
well these sre the main problems i face there are many more but that doesn’t effect me so i want CBSE back with logic and not rote and no projects no child likes it i have done a serveythat out of 47 kids in a class only 10 are happy rest sad the sad 1s include toppers I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO BUT IT WOULD BE FUN ONLY IF TEACHERS UNDERSTOOD US !!!

I appreciate the implentation of grading system. We can avoid both the mental torture to the students by their own parents and the suicide of of our immatured children to a certain extent.
Even after the aboiltion of grading, the recurring of suicides by the students,it should be answerable and cannot be compensated by money in the name of” Interim reliefs” to the family of the victim.

it will be too helpful for students community to crack IIT or any other competitive examination if school teacher implement it nicely, impartially and without any bias.Cbse has to keep constant vigilance whether schools are properly implementing this noble idea of cbse or not.

this is good for student’s future.but you have to given also the percentage of all students to compare with each other……..

this step is not appropriate at all as spirit of competition will not be seen anywhere. Now think of a student securing 89%;he did not get A2 grade
due to a %.Now every student has to work more harder than earlier to be away from such conditions.

The new grading system is really bad, the teachers are giving a lot of projects do be done in less time. It is becoming a burden rather than a relief to students.

i`am 16 years but the students of my age face the stress and competiton of 25 years.is there is a need of competition. a student who secured 99%may not know about the social occurences exacly.a student who got 33% may have other interests and mat have more imagination than 99%. why the parents are nat able to guess it.is bypc, mpc are the only options.why they are restricting there imagination at the age of 10.why can`t you enjoy your reading which makes a new sense of understanding things.why do we all restrict ourself in name of competition which makes to forget the values of mankind.answer my questions

This grading system is good only on one hand because we Indians have a problem of comparing ourselves to each other we do not see that this is a kind of parciality which we do on comparing our marks. The main thing we have to understand that we go to school for getting knowledge not getting a degree.we should study for getting knowledge and entertainment not to get marks. In this grading system there are less chances of partiality. The main motive we should have that to achieve our target of life that what we want to become in future not are the marks which we have to carry.

  7. January 27th, 2010 at 16:58 | #7

i prefer marks over grades. It will be more open and interesting if the CBSE board declares marks instead of gradesas the level of competition is rising day by day.

While Change is a welcome initiative i am worried about the academic capability of the teachers w r t to the new curriculum. On an Average age of teachers in our school should be around 35 years and they have been subjected to subject oriented and % oriented all these days. suddently they are being told to shift to automatic transmission of gears from manual gears…
are the schools , environment and future compatible with these changes ???

i am sure that this system will increase the burden on children ….with all those project works ….and of course children will have to keep buttering teachers all the time….moreover a child getting 99 marks nd the other getting 95 will both have A1 grade inspite of the 4 marks difference ….all are against this grading system…so it shud not be introduced….

This grading system has both merits and demerits .it has made happy to one but sad to others. The toppers are very much annoyed about this pattern of CBSE. But i on my and parents behalf think that it is agood thing .it will have a great effect on students

It’s good job done by CBSE to award grades in comparison to the percentage system as the students can now be able to perform well in the IIT’S or some other competitive exam .But my point is that a person willing to know his score should be given to him personally not as open. The only open result must be the grades.
    -Thank You

I dont like dis grade marking it just due to how I know my marks and how I ll be comptition with another person?……If I got 74 and my friend get 64. we have 10 marks difrent but we both have same grade.. So I think Education department didn’t take a good dissition

% shud also b given with grades…….otherwise scoring 90% or 94% would become one and the same thing….!!

I am student of class 9th and study in c.b.s.e board. This grade system is not proper system which can help students to getting their marks good. I am against it because it reduce the importance of toppers but although decreases a capability level of student. As many student learn to get good academic performance but this grade system make the child who study less they also ran away from study because of grade system. Now many children didn’t have any fear of fail and they never study, So in which manner it is good for student .Is it reduces the pressure of a student , is this make an student a sincere student. The only one answer come that it is not helpful in any manner. But although if the c.b.s.e want to help the student so that they can take exam of that who didn’t passed the exam at least 2 times so that this way weak student would also study by not taking in mind of exams fear.

i think grading system is a better way to judge students…. as the entire examination system is prone to human errors and differences… liberal and strict nature of checking adopted by teachers cn create too much difference in the marks of students… with grading… such differences are liely to disappear as scores will be in ranges… it will also reduce the habit of mugging up the facts in order to score more marks… and will urge more concept-oiented learning… and about the tension of scoring 89 and losing a grade.. i think the teachers will be responsible enough 2 understand the difference created by 1 mark.. and will surely try to fix it so that the children dont suffer…

You guys want knowledge or competition?
The level of studies in India has not developed enough that parents think of other options.
A scientist need not know 100 of languages, neither he need to know history, geography etc.
If he donates this time to his interest he will be a successful scientist.
That is why India has slowed down on quality only quantity.

We need smart people not memorising and vomiting machines.
Numbers have it that X and XII toppers are no good in life.
Nearly all great minds did flunk in subject not interested in. And low mark destroy their brain and lead them to do suicides and people who are dumb parrots “succeed”.
You all might have read FROG AND THE NIGHTINGALE in class X.
Tell me where am I wrong?

Support Grading system for it will give more scope to the weaker students. Rate of suicides have increased in the past recent years and grading system will surely bring it down. Afterall Life counts more than Success !!

It is a good step taken by the CBSE but it is more difficult from earlier becoz now the children are examine at each and every step but it is good becoz it will increase the children knowledge and their abilities. So, it is a good step for improving our Future and all the children should appreciate it.

  21. February 15th, 2010 at 15:41 | #21

i think this new grading system is really very good opertunity for those who gains les marks in the subject due to any kind of reason. so i think it is gud that govt. makes this kind of policy

I think the new system can work better. But evaluation should be liberal.

  23. February 20th, 2010 at 11:34 | #23

I think that the new system of grading can work better than giving percentage there are some disadvantage but more advantage to the student getting less mark they can get raise high in the grade

yes this new systm of cce has implemented burden of project works & inly those wuld get high marks who r close towards teacher not the person who studies better than that one but take no tension keep rocking & start impressing teachers rather than girls

soe teachers are reducing the marks without any reason.they only see the students face for judging their marks.they dont see their work.they see partiality.

  27. February 25th, 2010 at 09:37 | #27

undoubtedly board should give marks on percentage basis . a student who has burnt himself whole year to get 99% will have toi sit empty handed with these mere grades .sudhakar kumar upadhayay.

  28. February 25th, 2010 at 17:16 | #28

i think it is more beneficial to poor students to be passed in exams ,it will have less preasure on student . i think it will work ……….

This grading system is goot for all.at the same time the marks also to be given, just for knowing their level and hard work results.no need to accept any where for admission.so try to publish as private only for the concerned student.
another doubt, how to follow plus one selection as per this grading system.

  31. February 27th, 2010 at 06:32 | #31

according 2 me, cbse should give percentage along wid grades.this would result in non-lowering our competitive spirits. grades upto an extent , gives the students —a stress free education

This gradingsystem would compulsary make the dull students to make them easy in saying that iI secure b,c,d,.so,thus they may have an oppurtunityto study well and score good marks.
    student,

all the best be bold while answering questions

Well, this grading system may appear good to many, but it’s not that good…..if it’s just 4 the ‘few’ students who commit suicides every year, it’s really not that good…..they do so since they fail despite their high expectations…..but who said that they cant fail in this CCE system???Disgusting!!!
According to me, this ’suicide’ thing cant go off with that system…
CBSE needs to dilute its syllabus….
What will a student who wants to become a businessman do of ‘TRIGONOMETRY’ in his whole life???
